GENERAL THEORY OF RELATIVITY AND ASTROPHYSICS

Many predictions of general relativity vary significantly from those of classical physics, especially those concerning the passage of time ,the geometry of space, the propagation of light and the motion of bodies in free fall.General Theory's predictions have been confirmed in all experiments and observations till date. You may find it hard to believe, but the General Theory is the simplest relativistic theory of gravity, which is consistent with experimental data. However, even today some unanswered questions remain, the most fundamental being how General Theory can be reconciled with the laws of Quantum Physics.

Einstein's theory has important implication in many fields, including Astrophysics. It points towards the existence of what is now famously known as Black Holes - regions of space in which space and time are distorted in such a way that nothing , not even light , can escape - as an end state for massive stars.Massive stars are those stars whose mass is 1.4 times that of our Sun.This value was calculated by an Indian scientist, Subramaniya Chandrashekar , and is known as the Chandrashekar Limit in his honour.
